Ideal student

A confident, curious boy who enjoys taking ownership of his learning and making the most of the extraordinary range of opportunities on offer. Independence is key here - boys are expected to explore, experiment and occasionally get things wrong before finding their stride.

Main sports

Football and rugby dominate the autumn term, followed by hockey or the famous Eton field game in spring, with cricket and athletics in summer. Rowing is particularly strong, and there is a vast menu of additional options from fives and rackets to fencing, sailing and mountaineering.

Stand-out facilities

Remarkable even by public school standards. Highlights include the vast Sports and Aquatics Centre, the Olympic-standard rowing lake at Dorney, the impressive science building opened by the late Queen, and extensive arts provision including the Farrer Theatre and expansive music school with recording studios.

Saturday school

Yes. As a full boarding school, Saturdays remain busy with lessons, sport and co-curricular activities.

Did you know?

Every boy has his own single study-bedroom from the moment he arrives - an unusual luxury in the boarding school world and something many pupils say helps them settle quickly.

Our takeaway

Perhaps the most famous school in the world, yet far less stuffy than its reputation suggests - a vast, opportunity-rich environment where confident boys are given the freedom to explore their interests and grow into independent young adults.

"Tradition is important here and still shapes some of our guiding principles but we seek to build on the past while looking to the future."

Mr Simon Henderson
